The only prerequisite for entry is an idea and the desire to write. You need to have some kind of outline/treatment, completed draft, or something in between. You will meet with active Slamdance readers who have experience working with screenwriters. The instructors will help you build upon your work, the goal being to move your writing sample into the direction of a finalized piece of work that is ready to submit to screenplay competitions and production companies. Just fill out a registration form, send payment to the Slamdance Office by mail or fax: 5634 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles CA 90038 (323) 466-1794 Instruction StyleInstructors will cover the elements of screenwriting using selected professional screenplays and activities to stimulate and expand your understanding of the craft in an effort to create a final product. After submitting payment we will contact you for your writing sample, something that you will need to submit electronically at least 1-2 weeks before meeting with an instructor. Online Feedback PortionBeginning with your submission , feedback will be available from your instructor if you have not already requested coverage service on the project you are working on. Whether you pay in advance for one or two meetings, the instructor with expand upon the feedback provided to you ahead of time (at least 48 hours before meeting), that will result in constructive repartee. Meetings should take no longer than one hour. One or Two ClassesWhether you have a great idea for a screenplay and can put together a synopsis (an outline or treatment is also acceptable) that covers the beginning, middle and end of your story, or if you have completed the first draft of a screenplay (roughly 90-120 pages) meetings will be no longer than one hour at a time. The goal for treatments should be to expand upon the basic outline and focus on a sound first act. The goal for a completed draft is to cover what works and what does not and how best to improve the screenplay and create a final draft. Special RequestsIf there is something that you would specifically like the instructor to cover, please include a brief note with your submission paperwork. If you have already received coverage and are now following up on that, you may wish to request a private consultation with that same reader; if so, please include the readers number with your paperwork. LocationsScript consultations should take place in Los Angeles at an agreed upon meeting place, ideally in the Los Angeles/Hollywood area. Special arrangements can be made for screenwriters that live outside of the Los Angeles area to discuss matters via telephone, or to meet with Slamdance alumni screenwriters that may be living in your neighborhood. InstructorsSlamdance Readers/Instructors are all industry professionals and all have a combination of the following qualifications: professional coverage background, production/development executors, fellow competitions readers, professional writers, writers assistants, Slamdance alumni filmmakers and screenwriters, playwrights and journalists. CoverageSlamance coverage is a direct line of communication from our readers to aspiring screenwriters. It is between 1200-1500 words (approximately 2-3 pages) and consists of constructive criticism that is meant to help screenwriters hone their work into the best possible draft. Slamdance coverage will give you insight into the mind of a reader who reads a few hundred screenplays a year and will assist in crafting the submission into something that can advance in any competition and impress agents, reps, and producers.
