News: SLAMDANCE POLAND COMPLETES A SUCCESSFUL 2ND EDITION

2 Polish Films win a slot at the 2008 Slamdance Film Festival

Slamdance Poland has completed it's 2nd edition from April 19th to the 22nd in the Communist chic Nowa Huta district of Krakow.

And the winners are:

"Trojka do wzięcia" (Three for the Taking) directed by Bartka Konopki (40 min)

"Klinika" (Clinic) directed by Tomasza Wolskiego (27 min)

These winning films, a narrative and a documentary long form short, will screen together in a Polish showcase in Park City during our annual Park City festival.

A 5,000 złoty cash prize was shared by the director and writer of the feature film "Przebacz" (Forgiven) Marka Stacharskiego, as the cinematographer of "Emilka płacze" (Emilka Cries) and "Sezonu na kaczki" (Duck Season), Pawła Dyllusa.

An honorable mention went to "Na działce" (The allotment) directed by Thierry Paladino

Press Coverage: Film Threat: A Projectionist's Notes

by Gabriel Wardell
In keeping with the theme of this report, we present a few brief comments from our third Judge at Slamdance, Gabriel Wardell, a Baltimore academic, who also happened to serve as the projectionist. Since the beakdown of one of the projectors (at Slamdance '96) required manual reel changes during the competition screenings, Gabriel has a few cogent thoughts he'd like to share on festival screenings and projection etiquette.

You have just spent your life savings on our film and its about to screen at Slamdance. Bear in mind you are not opening at Grauman's Chinese Theater. Here are some simple (natch) things you can do to ensure the smoothest possible screening:

  1. Make sure your film arrives early and that the print is marked with the title. If the film is in two cans, label them: 1 of 2, 2 of 2.

  2. Label the heads and tails of your print clearly. Include such details as the gauge and reel number on EVERY head and tail. Example: CITIZEN KANE, B&W, mono, Reel 1 of 6, 1.33:1, Heads. Adequate leader should buffer both ends of the print.

  3. Write any special projection instructions of a seperate sheet and attach it to the inside of the film case. Example: "Focus on academy leader, as film begins on a soft image," or "There is no sound for the first minute of this film."

  4. Mark all change-overs clearly (and properly)

  5. Deliver your film ready to project! Your entire film should come heads out on projection reels (NOT CORES), with all leaders (double-side) spliced.

REMEMBER: Once the film is up on the screen, it is out of your hands. If there are problems with the sound, framing, or change-overs, deal with them diplomaticly. Speaking ill of the equipment, the festival, or the projectionist during your Q&A makes you sound petty. And most importantly - don't give the projectionist a hard time! You never know when he may turn out to be one of the judges.
